History

Southwestern Gastroenterology Specialists was established in the summer of 1990 by Dr. Frederick Ruthardt. Our original office on Morgantown Street in Uniontown, PA encompassed 800 square feet, and Dr. Ruthardt started with one employee. He was the first gastroenterologist to practice in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Over the years the practice has slowly grown – adding Dr. Charles Calabrese in 1991, Dr. Fraser Stokes in 1993, and Dr. Marc Happe in 2008. The practice has also gradually incorporated a number of outstanding physician assistants, including Nicole Adametz, Melissa Jamison, Jennifer Sankovich, Tara Meyer, Ashley Miller, and Katie Semans. In the late 90’s the practice moved to its current home in the Cherry Tree Lane area of Uniontown, located off the McClellandtown Road Exit of PA Route 119. We have also maintained a small office in Connellsville, PA for many years. In 2003 SWGI formed a partnership with The Uniontown Hospital to open the Southwestern Endoscopy Center (SWEC). This is an ambulatory surgery center, solely dedicated to excellence in performing GI endoscopic procedures, such as Upper GI Endoscopies (EGD’s) and Colonosopies (Colo’s). Over the years we have added a number of important new services and have cared for over 100,000 people. Currently, over 70 people work, in total, at SWGI and SWEC. We are dedicated to our community, and we strive to care for each patient, like they are a member of our family. Since our inception, we have been independently owned, and we have provided uninterrupted GI consultative services at the Uniontown Hospital for the past thirty years.
