Directed Endoscopy & Colonoscopy

Making patients' much-needed screenings more convenient

Normally, endoscopic exams are preceded a week or two prior by an office consultation with the gastroenterologist. But at Southwestern Gastrointestinal Specialists, we recognize that there are situations for which this two-step process is impractical. So we offer "directed" upper endoscopy and colonoscopy, which allow you to refer patients directly for an endoscopic exam without the prior consultation.

Providing options for patients who need them.

We serve many out-of-town patients for whom two round-trip journeys are inconvenient or likely to result in noncompliance. And there are other reasons why patients can't or won't have their exam following the two-step process. While the initial consultation is important, a scope procedure minus the consultation is preferable to - and better for patients than - having no exam at all.

Skipping the consult, but not the care & communication.

With directed endoscopy, the key to maintaining the standard of care is to skip the initial consultation without eliminating those things that it accomplishes. And this comes down to communication, preparedness and thoroughness. Performing roughly 9,000 endoscopic procedures each year, about 7,000 of them in our private endoscopy center, we have developed many protocols and efficiencies that make directed endoscopy effective and successful.

After you fax in your referral indicating that the patient needs a directed EGD or colonoscopy without the consultation, our experienced team takes over, calling your patient, scheduling the exam and beginning the process.

We explain the exam and preparation, answer patients' questions and obtain from them the information that would otherwise be acquired during the initial consultation. We also mail them their preparation kit directly. By the time your patient arrives, they - and we - are informed and prepared.

Help your patients get the skilled, experienced & top-quality care they deserve.

Other than foregoing the consultation, all other aspects of your patient's endoscopy are unchanged. Your patient will be examined in our state-of-the-art facility by an experienced, board-certified gastroenterologist using modern, top-quality equipment. In addition, we give them the compassion and dedication for which we've become known. And your patient leaves with a highly detailed, professional report (including exam images) that we mail to you before the end of the day.

To help you take the best possible care of your patients, we're proud to offer directed EGD and colonoscopy for those who you feel are appropriate candidates. If you have questions, please call. We welcome your referrals.
