Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis (UC). These are both autoimmune conditions where the body’s immune system attacks the small intestine (Crohn’s) and/or the colon (Crohn’s and UC). Inflammation can result in chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, blood in the stool, abnormal weight loss, and even colon cancer. These conditions are diagnosed with radiology tests and colonoscopy. There have been many important treatment advances for those with IBD in recent years. Biologics are a class of medicines that that we use in severe cases to suppress the autoimmune inflammatory process that causes IBD.
